Michael Sachs visits UNT

Michael Sachs, principal trumpet of the Cleveland Orchestra and trumpet teacher at the Cleveland Institute of Music, was a guest of John Holt November 7-9, 2006. 

During his visit at UNT, he presented a master class at the Wednesday Trumpet Departmental and performed on a recital on Thursday.

Cornettist Kiri Tollaksen visits UNT

Kiri Tollaksen, an internationally-recognized cornetto specialist visited the University of North Texas in October 2006.  In addition to presenting lecture recitals on the cornetto, she also performed as principal cornetto in a rare period instrument performance of Monteverdi's Vespers of 1610 with the UNT Baroque Orchestra.

Crystal Records release new John Holt CD

Crystal Records has released the latest recording from Professor John Holt with the Slovak Radio Symphony Orchestra available from Crystal Records, Amazon or anywhere fine classical recordings are sold. CD765: Trumpet Concertos. John Holt, Trumpet; Slovak Radio Orchestra, Kirk Trevor, Conductor. ALEXANDRA PAKHMUTOVA, Concerto for Trumpet in Bb; ERIC EWAZEN, Concerto for Trumpet and Strings; ANTHONY PLOG, Concerto No. 2 for Trumpet and Orchestra.

John Holt is principal trumpet with the Dallas Opera Orchestra and trumpet professor at the University of North Texas. His first three CDs received unanimous critical acclaim, with Gramophone Magazine saying “Holt plays with perfect technique and intonation, altering his sound to suit..challenging works.”

Pakhmutova’s works are imbued with the spirit of Russian life, folk tunes, and impressions of the country. Ewazen, faculty member at The Juilliard School, has written many works for brass and is the recipient of numerous composition awards and prizes. Plog, frequently recorded trumpet player and composer, is a music professor in Freiburg, Germany. 


UNT trumpets win at the National Trumpet Competition

The UNT Trumpet Department was well represented at the 2006 National Trumpet Competition.  Four students (Nicholas Althouse, Jason Dovel, Nicholas Harvey, Logan Place) were selected to compete in the live rounds of competition at George Mason University in March.  Regents Professor of Trumpet Keith Johnson served as a judge for the competition and also performed in the faculty-artist recital.  Althouse, Dovel and Harvey won the Orchestral Excerpts/Ensemble section of the Historic Division.

February 1st - 3rd, Eric Ewazen will be Mr. Holt's guest at the University of North Texas where he will give master classes, accompany Mr. Holt on his trumpet sonata and be in attendance on an all-Ewazen concert. 

February 1, 2006 at 12:00 in the Recital Hall at The University of North Texas, Eric will speak to the trumpet department as well as accompany Mr. Holt on his Sonata for trumpet and piano. This performance/lecture is free to the public

February 2, 2006 at 8:00 in the Concert Hall at The University of North Texas, the trumpet, trombone choirs, brass quintet and others will perform an all Ewazen concert. 
This concert is free to the public.
