The Reinhard Oppel Collection

Dr. Jackson

·         Established the Reinhard Oppel Memorial Collection at UNT encompassing approximately

10,000 pages of musical manuscripts, rare musical editions and books on music. In conjunction with bringing the Collection to the University, I worked to establish the new Center for Schenkerian Studies at the College of Music to be associated with it. I arranged for the main body of the Oppel Collection to be picked up from the Rev. Oppel’s home in July 1999. I collected a number of further items in July 2000. Further items will join the Collection in 2001.

·         The Oppel Collection continues to bring local, national, and international attention and recognition to UNT. For example, the Dallas Morning News ran a feature story on Jan. 22, 2000 in the Today section of the Saturday paper “Treasure trove of German composer’s papers ends up at UNT.”

·         Organized a performance of Oppel’s Mass (the manuscript is preserved in the Oppel Collection) in Salzburg Cathedral on July 17, 2000 by the Canadian Choir Consort Caritatis under the direction of Maestro Howard Dyck (winner of the Order of Canada 2000).

·         Organized a concert of “Hidden Music” from the Collection on Nov. 3, 2000 in Toronto in conjunction with the Toronto 2000 national meetings of the American Musicological Society, Society for Music Theory, College Music Society, Society for Ethnomusicology and many other music-related societies. This concert, featuring the Concert Caritatis under Dyck, Canadian Soprano Monica Whicher, and the Penderecki Quartet will be recorded by the CBC and broadcast nationally in Canada and internationally on the Web. The CBC is also planning a documentary on the Schenker-Oppel story. German radio stations have expressed interest in buying the concert recording.
