College of Music Diversity Initiatives

The Division of Music History, Theory, and Ethnomusicology actively supports College of Music diversity initiatives in terms of  concert and lecture programming, student activities, and curriculum development.  These efforts are spearheaded by Professor Eileen M. Hayes, Diversity Liaison of the College of Music.

Curriculum development: Division faculty continue to develop courses that expand upon current offerings in music theory, history, and ethnomusicology. New ethnomusicology course offerings for Fall 2002 included Professor Eileen Hayes' "Music and Social Identity: Race, Gender, and Sexuality." In the Spring 2003, she is offering an undergraduate course entitled: "African American Music and the Politics of Ethnomusicological Engagement." A graduate seminar on Gender and Music will be offered Fall 2003. The Division anticipates increasing success as we strive to meet the College's goal of educating a diverse body of leaders in music in the 21st century.

Spring 2003 events: The division is co-sponsoring with the Vocal Studies and Jazz Studies divisions the following events: UNT faculty contralto Linda di Fiore, in a March 2003 concert to commemorate Women's History Month. Fiore's concert is entitled: "Not for Women Only:" Art songs by women composers; 8 p.m. Recital Hall.

UNT Students Perform the Music of John Coltrane, Professor John Murphy, conductor; February 17, 2003, Kenton Hall 8 p.m. in observance of Black History Month.

Noted ethnomusicologist Portia K. Maultsby will deliver a lecture entitled: "Motown: A northern representation of Blackness?" on February 19, 2003 (another Black History Month observance); Room 258, 4:00 p.m.

Student Activities: Faculty representatives from the division's three areas have offered their support toward the founding of

an Asian/Asian American students organization within the College of Music. This group, the first of its kind in the College of Music, will have its initial meeting in January 2003. It is anticipated that the organization will enable undergraduate and graduate students of Asian-heritage to further develop esprit de corps so that they might continue to flourish in their academic and professional pursuits.
