Beginning and Intermediate players of the double Bass will join the North Texas Bass Camp on Wednesday, June 11 for three days of fun, participation and instruction. Playing, practicing and performing will abound and students will enjoy the week-ending game of “Double Bass Jeopardy.” Participants will have the opportunity to work with Mr. Bradetich as well as outstanding teachers Jack Unzicker – Texas Tech University and Jessica Gilliam-Valls – Austin, TX and Sonia Ray – Brazil
.
Jack Unzicker has performed as Principal Double Bass of the Lubbock Symphony, AIMS Festival Orchestra (Graz, Austria), Plano Symphony, Dallas Chamber Orchestra, and Orquestra Divertimento (Costa Rica). He has also performed with the Dallas Opera, Fort Worth, Shreveport, Richardson, East Texas, and Abilene Symphony Orchestras. He has performed solo and chamber music recitals in Alaska, California, North Carolina, Texas, Virginia, Washington, Austria, Germany, and as a member of the innovative bass quartet Downright Upright at the International Society of Bassists and American String Teachers Association Conventions.
Prior to his appointment at Texas Tech University, where he teaches private lessons, double bass orchestral repertoire, audition preparation, solo masterclasses, and technique class, Unzicker taught at The University of Texas at Arlington, Tarleton State University, Texas Woman’s University, the Jeff Bradetich Double Bass Summer Camps, and as a Graduate Teaching Fellow at the University of North Texas. In 2005, he created the Jack Unzicker Double Bass Workshop, a series of master classes, private lessons, solo, chamber music, and jazz recitals in his hometown of Juneau, Alaska.
Unzicker received his Master of Music Degree in double bass performance and jazz studies, as well as the Outstanding Graduate Student in Strings Award from the University of North Texas, where he is currently pursuing a Doctorate of Musical Arts Degree in double bass performance and orchestral conducting. He received his Bachelor of Music Degree in jazz studies, magna cum laude, and the College of Music Outstanding Graduate Award from Western Washington University. Additionally he has studied at the Pierre Monteux School and the Henry Mancini Institute. His teachers include Jeff Bradetich, William Clay, Lynn Seaton, Anna Doak, and Chuck Israels.

Jessica Gilliam-Valls: double bassist, cellist, recording artist, producer, educator, wife and mother. The Austin, Texas-native musician exemplifies the ubiquitous artistry of a true music lover, heeding no one genre, discipline, or stage. Ms. Gilliam-Valls studied at the Oberlin Conservatory and went on for a Masters of Music in Double Bass Performance at the Manhattan School of Music and now a Doctorate of Musical Arts at the University of Texas at Austin. She has shared the stage with a dozen orchestras including the Austin Symphony Orchestra, San Antonio Symphony, the New Hampshire Symphony, Tosca Tango Orchestra, and Orqestra da Radio e Televisao Cultura in Sao Paulo, Brazil, where she was principal bassist for over three years. She appears regularly with chamber ensembles, tango and bluegrass bands, in studio recording sessions, on film soundtracks, television and radio jingles, and many popular festival stages including the Aspen, Hot Springs, Victoria Bach and Austin Chamber Music Festivals, to name a few.. She is presently a member of the Austin Lyric Opera Orchestra and a faculty member at The Austin Chamber Music Center and Huston-Tillotson University. The summer of 2007 found her in Oklahoma where she played her International Society of Bassists Convention performance debut.
