All piano instruction for non-keyboard music majors, prior to the
proficiency, is in classes. Upon entry to the College of Music,
students are interviewed and/or auditioned for piano placement.
At the time of the audition students either pass the proficiency
requirements or are placed in one of four levels of keyboard skills
study. The University Catalog and the UNT Student Handbook state
that students are required to register for
keyboard skills instruction continuously until the Secondary Piano
Proficiency Exam has been passed.
If, after taking MUAG 1014, the Piano Proficiency has still not
been passed, students are required to enroll in MUAS 3523, Functional
Piano (private lessons). If one, two or three parts of the Piano
Proficiency remain unpassed (half of the total exam) at the conclusion
of Piano 4, the student will receive a grade of I (Incomplete).
If four or more parts of the Piano Proficiency remain unpassed,
the student will receive an F in the course and
will register to repeat Piano IV. The Incomplete will be changed
to F if the entire Proficiency is not passed within one calendar
year. Records of progress toward passing the Piano Proficiency Exam
are neither retained, nor valid, after five years of inactivity
(no registration/no testing).
