Student Organizations
Students at North Texas have the opportunity to get involved in several organizations besides performance ensembles. in order to become a member in the music fraternities or sorority, students must rush in the fall semester. To become a member of either NTSME, or ASTA, see Ms. Hudnall, Dr. Rohwer or Dr. Henry.

American String Teachers Association (ASTA):
UNT's ASTA chapter is a collegiate chapter of the national organization
by the same name. Membership is open to all people interested in string
education - not just music education majors - and includes harp and guitar.
Benefits of membership are a subscription to American String Teacher magazine,
very reasonable instrument insurance, the option to subscribe to Strings
Magazine at a group rate, and the opportunity to make contacts with experienced
teachers. Activities include workshops/clinics on varying subjects; past
activities have included clinics on setting up a private studio, taking
orchestra auditions, and string symposia.
The Association of Professional Black Musicians (APBM):
The Association of Professional Black Musicians is an organization that
exists to celebrate the diversity of African-American culture through its
music. APBM promotes the advancement of all forms of Afro-ethnic music,
and hopes through education and exposure to cultivate an appreciation for
this music throughout the UNT campus and the surrounding community. APBM
also encourages academic and musical excellence and unity among fellow
Blacks in the field of music. APBM seeks to provide both educational and
performance opportunities for all persons interested in celebrating and
preserving the legacy of the Black musical heritage.
Mu Phi Epsilon:
Mu Phi Epsilon is an international, professional music fraternity open
for membership to both men and women. Mu Phi Epsilon was founded in 1903
and now has 136 collegiate chapters and more than 44,000 members. The fraternity
is dedicated to the advancement of music in America and throughout the
world, while promoting individual musicianship and scholarship. The fraternity
sponsors many competitive cash awards and honors for its members, as well
as contests such as the Original Composition Contest, Musicological Research
Contest, and the International Talent Competition where the winners receive
cash, a contract and the chance to perform at the National Convention.
Mu Phi Epsilon is also about friendship and its importance in the lives
of its members. The fraternity's symbol is the triangle with its three
equal sides representing the union between music, friendship and harmony.

North Texas Student Music Educators (NTSME):
NTSME is an organization sponsored by the Music Educators National Conference
(MENC). It is designed to further educate and enrich members on the techniques,
policies, and politics of music education. Open to all undergraduate and
graduate music majors at UNT, membership in NTSME includes a student membership
in the MENC and includes membership in the College Student Section of the
Texas Music Educators Association (TMEA).

Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia:
Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia Fraternity of America was founded on October 6,
1898 at the New England Conservatory in Boston, MA. It is the oldest professional
fraternity for men in music and the largest fraternal organization of any
kind. The primary purpose of the fraternity is to encourage and actively
promote the highest standards of creativity, performance, education and
research in music in America. Further purposes are to develop and encourage
loyalty to the Alma Mater, to foster the mutual welfare and brotherhood
of students of music, to develop the truest fraternal spirit among its
members, and to instill in all people an awareness of music's highly important
role in the enrichment of the human spirit. Currently there are over 180
active collegiate chapters as well as numerous alumni chapters throughout
the United States. On the national level the fraternity grants scholarships,
commissions new works, and sponsors a wide variety of programs and projects
through the Sinfonia Foundation. Locally, Phi Mu Alpha presents two recitals
annually, with one recital devoted exclusively to American music, and conducts
a wide variety of social activities, musical endeavors, and service projects.
Membership is open to any man with an interest in working to advance the
cause of music in America. Rush activities are held at the beginning of
each semester.

Sigma Alpha Iota (SAI):
Sigma Alpha Iota is an international music fraternity for women. Its
purpose is to foster interest in music and to promote social contact among
talented women musicians sharing the same ideals and interests in music.
SAI has been a pioneer in supporting music education, performance, theory,
and composition both nationally and in local colleges and communities.
