The Freshman Tuba Class 2002-03

This was our largest ever UNT freshman tuba class in a photo taken after a Fall 2002 Euphonium Tuba Choir concert in the UNT Music Concert Hall.

The Texas Winds Brass Quintet is one of many ensembles that are part of Texas Winds Musical Outreach of Dallas, Texas. Texas Winds brings high quality musical programs to people who cannot participate in the cultural life of the city. It is Texas Winds' purpose to reach out to people confined by ill health, the economically disadvantaged, the isolated and elderly. This season, 70 musicians are involved in a varitey of programs. They are providing 650 free concerts for 25,000 people.

The following UNT Faculty members regularly perform with the Texas Winds Brass Quintet:

Dallas Opera Low Brass

This was taken early 2003 in the backstage area of the Dallas Fairpark Music Hall during the intermission of a performance of Giacomo Puccini's "Turandot."

Texas Wind Symphony Tuba Section

This photo of Everett Gilmore and Don Little was taken in the Bass Performance Hall of Fort Worth following a Texas Wind Symphony concert. Mr. Gilmore is the retired principal tuba of the Dallas Symphony and former adjunct professor of tuba at UNT.

1893 J.W. Pepper Sousaphone

Everett Gilmore holds the original sousaphone built in 1893 for Sousa and the U.S. Marine Band by the J.W. Pepper instrument manufacturer of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. This instrument was on loan to the Texas Wind Symphony for their July 4, 2002 concert in the Bass Performance Hall of Fort Worth, Texas.

UNT PhD graduate Steve Shoop visits with internationally renowned tuba virtuoso and teacher, Harvey G. Phillips at the May 2003 Regional ITEC Conference. Steve is currently a band director at Ennis High School in Texas.

UNT graduates Raul Rodriguez and Richard Morgan visit at the May 2003 Regional ITEC Conference at Texas Christian University, Fort Worth. Raul is tuba professor at Southwest Texas State University and Richard is tuba professor at Texas A&M University at Kingsville.
