John Scott, Professor of clarinet at the University of North Texas, earned both the Master of Music and Doctoral of Musical Arts in Applied Woodwinds and Music Literature from Indiana University where he was a student of Henry Gulick. He earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Music Education from Frostburg State University. In addition to his teaching responsibilities at UNT he chairs the Division of Instrumental Studies in the College of Music.
He has appeared as an orchestra player, recitals, chamber musician and clinician throughout the United States. Performances include the Victoria Beach Festival (Texas), the New York University Contemporary Festival, the International clarinetist, recitals throughout the US, Taiwan, and Japan. He has performed with the Richardson Symphony Orchestra and as clarinetist with the Chamber Music International. During the summers of 1985, 87, and 89, he performed and taught in Taiwan at the Summer Music Institute founded by the University of North Texas and the Ministry of Education. (Taiwan R.O.C.)
He has been Editor of Reviews and, until 1995, was Advertising Manager for The Clarinet, official journal of the International Clarinet Association. He appears on the recent release of the Kalvier CD, Bird Songs, Romantic Chamber Music of Arthur Bird. He is also an artist/ clinician for Leblanc.
James Gillespie, serves as Professor of Music at UNT. Prior to joining the faculty in 1978, he served as a faculty member at Concord College, Indian State University, University of Redlands and Northeast Louisiana University. He holds master and doctorate degrees in clarinet/woodwinds from Indiana University where he studied with Henry Gulick. His reference books on works for reed trio and solos for unaccompanied clarinet have become standard references in the field, he has edited works for Musica Rura, Southern Music Company and Billaudot.
For the past 18 years he has been editor of The Clarinet, the quarterly journal of the International Clarinet Association. He has performed at clarinet conferences in Denver, Oberlin, Quebec, Cincinnati, Tempe and Paris and has also give solo and chamber music recitals in England, Scotland, Japan, Hong Kong, Hungary, Germany and Taiwan. Composers from France, England and the U.S. have dedicated works to him, and has premiered several new works for clarinet. In 1994 and 95, he served on the fury for Dos Hermanas International Clarinet Competition in Spain, and during the summer of 1997, he performed at the I.C.A. ClarinetFest at Texas Tech, the Cracow Clarinet Festival in Cracow, Poland and the first ever European Clarinet and Saxophone Conference in Budapest, Hungary.
Deborah U. Fabian is an adjunct professor of clarinet at UNT and Collin County Community College. She is Principal Clarinetist with the Dallas Wind Symphony, Plano Symphony Orchestra and the Chamber Symphony Metrocrest. She received the undergraduate degree in Music Education and Clarinet Performance and Woodwinds from Michigan State University.
Ms. Fabian has performed with a number of ensembles throughout the country including the Dallas Symphony Orchestra, Dallas Opera Orchestra, Fort Worth Symphony, Buffalo Philharmonic, Grand Rapids Symphony as well as Creative Associates of Buffalo, performing and recording in New City and Berlin, Germany. She has made several recordings for Reference Recordings as a member of the Dallas Wind Symphony.
