Graham Phipps, professor of music theory and director of graduate studies, has been on the College of Music faculty since 1984. He received his PhD. from the University of Cincinnati.
His areas of expertise are primarily, history of music theory and analysis
of music of the Austro-Germanic tradition (1700-1950) and secondarily, history
of theory and analysis procedures from music of the 16th and 17th centuries.
He is an active researcher having worked in archival collections in Austria,
Germany, Switzerland, Italy, and Norway. He has published in The Musical
Quarterly, The Journal of Musicology, College Music Symposium, Music Analysis,
and 19th-Century Music, on such topics as Chopin, Richard Strauss
and Second Viennese School topics. He has also contributed essays to specialized
books on Bruckner (Ashgate Press), Schütz (Université catholique de Louvain,
Belgium) and Dallapiccola (Ricordi, Milan) an essay on Anton Webern for Music
Theory and Exploration of the Past (University of Chicago Press), and
a number of book reviews to Notes.
Currently, he is completing a book-length study on the instrumental music of Luigi Dallapiccola and is co-editing a book on Richard Strauss for Cambridge University Press. He has presented numerous papers in local, national and international conferences on a variety of subjects and has been the invited lecturere for special conferences and colloquia throughout the United States, Europe, and in Australia.
