David BithellLaila K. O’Sullivan earned three degrees (B.M., M.M. and Ph.D.) from the College of Music, University of North Texas. Her primary area of specialization is Pedagogy of Music Theory and Aural Skills, with a particular focus on the Undergraduate theory core. O'Sullivan's other academic interests include the transcription and analysis of improvised jazz solos, as well as studies within the genre of vocal jazz. She is an active member of the International Association for Jazz Education and has made numerous presentations at their international and regional meetings. At work on a number of music theory pedagogy topics, O'Sullivan has been exploring the potential inclusion of jazz literature within the undergraduate theory curriculum. Other projects in progress are focused on Aural Skills methods and their implementation in the classroom. She currently serves as Assistant Professor of Music Theory at the College of Music, returning to UNT after holding music theory appointments elsewhere for the last 12 years.
