The Division of Music History, Theory and Ethnomusicology welcomed Assistant Professor Eileen M. Hayes to our campus in Fall 2002. Hayes received her B.M. degree in music (piano/music history) from Temple University, her master's in folklore-ethnomusicology from Indiana University and her Ph.D. in ethnomusicology from the University of Washington. Her areas of interest include African American music, feminist theories, gender and sexuality, and race in American popular culture. Her publications include essays in African American Music: An Introduction (Routledge, 2006), Ethnomusicology (Spring/Summer 2004) and Women and Music: the Journal of Gender and Culture (Winter 2006). Professor Hayes is the co-editor of Black Women and Music: More than the Blues (University of Illinois Press, 2007). Her research into the interactions of race, gender, sexuality and class in regard to African American music cultures is complemented by her personal and professional advocacy on behalf of women, people of color, and other underrepresented constituencies in schools of music.
