On the UNT faculty since 1973, Joán Groom is coordinator for music theory
the director of undergraduate studies for the College of Music. She received
her bachelor of music degree from Oberlin College and her master's and doctoral
degrees from the Eastman School of Music. She studied music theory and composition
with Nadia Boulanger and Darius Milhaud. Her research interests lie in 20th
century analysis as well as principles and methods of theory pedagogy. Groom
was a member of the original National Consortium for Computer-Based Music
Instruction.
