Steven Friedson has been professor of music and professor of anthropology
at the University of North Texas since 1989. He received his bachelor's degree
from Cornish Institute of the Arts and his doctorate from University of Washington.
Friedson's research interests include music of Africa, music and healing,
phenomenology and rhythmic theory. He received a Fulbright research fellowship
to Malawi in 1987-88 and published his research results in the book, Dancing
Prophets: Musical Experience in Tumbuka Healing, with the University of
Chicago Press in 1996. He is currently doing research in Ghana West Africa
on music and traditional religion.
