Dworak received his bachelor of fine arts, master of fine arts and doctor of philosophy degrees from Carnegie-Mellon University.

Dworak received a grant from the National Institute of Education to model the learning of creativity in music, and several grants from UNT to develop computer-based curricula in sight singing and keyboard harmony. A member of the faculty of the Center for Network Neuroscience, his research has focused on developing models of pitch recognition as well as general models of music cognition. Dworak is co-author (with Robert Ottman) of Basic Ear Training Skills and author of the associated computer courseware. He is a professor of music in the Division of History, Theory and Ethnomusicology and joined the UNT faculty in 1979.
