RECORDING SERVICES

Recording Services provides audio and video recording services within the College of Music. The current audio standard is CD quality (16-bit, 44.1kHz), on high quality CD-R media, and video on DVD-R. A trained staff of students schedules and makes these recordings.

What events are recorded?

Major College ensembles and faculty recitals are automatically recorded, as are some undergraduate Senior Recitals (see below). Please ask us if you would like us to record other events. Our response will depend upon the availability of equipment and staff.

Fees

Required Recordings

Fees are charged for the recording of all events not listed above and are paid in the Concert Office at the time of scheduling. The cost of recording MUAG 4700 & MUCP 4190 Senior Recitals is included in the course fees.

Non-required Recordings and Recording Sessions

Any public concert can also be recorded. Charges for recording in stereo are $70 if a CD is produced, or $55 for you to download from our website.

Rates for audio session recording (CDR) are $30 per hour, and for video recording (DVD-R) are $50 per hour. This includes time for set-up, tear-down and processing/editing, with a minimum of $50. One set of CDs/DVDs is provided.

Please ask for an estimate before booking sessions with us. Recording Sessions in College facilities may only take place in accordance with the College of Music event scheduling policies and timetables. We will book the facility for you.

Please give us as much advance notice as possible, and at least one clear week before the week in which your event is scheduled. We will do our best to accede to your request, though at busy times of the year we may be unable to do so.

CD-R and DVD-R Copies

Our basic charge for making a CD copy is $10.00, and for a DVD copy $15.00. But, because the time involved is less, we offer lower prices when multiple copies are made at the same time.

Clients can take advantage of these cheaper rates by ordering CDs in advance:

  • If you are scheduling a recording session or concert recording with us and know that you will want more than one copy of the final CD or DVD, order these in advance to receive the lower rate.

  • If you know that you will want a copy of the CoM recording of an ensemble concert (perhaps because you are taking part in the concert), and order and pay for this in advance of the performance, you will also receive the lower rate because your copy will be made at the same time as the archive CD or DVD.

The rates charged for copies are

  CD-R DVD-R
in advance $8.00 $13.00
after the event $10.00 $15.00

For more than one copy made at the same time, each additional CD-R is charged at $6.00 and each additional DVD-R is charged at $10:00, whether ordered before or after the event.

A Note on CD-Rs

We provide our recordings on high quality CD-Rs, but these need greater care in handling than manufactured CDs. Like the CDs that you buy in stores (silver discs), they can be damaged by careless handling, but CDRs are more easily scratched than silver discs and are also more sensitive to heat and light. It must be emphasized that nobody really knows how long a CD-R can be expected to last, so to aid their longevity do not leave them in hot environments (like your car), or in direct sunlight. CD-Rs are generally less reflective than silver CDs, and some players have problems playing them for this reason. It is impossible to predict in advance which players will have trouble with which CD-Rs, as this varies according to the make of the CD-R and the player. If you have difficulty in playing a CD-R provided by us, please check it on another player. In the event that no player will play it, please return the disc to us so we can check it and replace a faulty disc.
