Welcome to the website of the Office of Advising for the College
of Music! We applaud your interest in studying for a degree in
Music at the University of North Texas (UNT). On on our website,
we've provided information pertaining specifically to entrance
requirements, auditioning, new student orientation, advising and
degree plans. To access College of Music (COM) information as
well as application packets, audition dates and suggestions for
audition repertoire, please go to http://www.music.unt.edu
. (see below for additional information for transfer
students)
We've included a number of web-links in this letter to direct
you to the most helpful sources of information about coming to
UNT and becoming a Music major. To access forms and information
about applying to the University, please go to: http://www.unt.edu/admissions.htm
. International students should use the link at: http://www.international.unt.edu
.
The COM Advising Office is generally always available to answer
your questions. You may call or visit us at any time during the
week--office hours are 8-12 and 1-5, M-F. If you'd prefer to make
an appointment, please call one of us or send an email and let
us know when you'd like to visit. We'll call you back! You might
also like to take a tour of the Music Building , offered M-F at
1:00 pm--no appointment is required for this tour. You may arrange
to have a UNT Campus tour on the same day by contacting http://www.unt.edu/ambassadors/tours.htm for a reservation.
If you are interested in visiting us, we recommend that you do
so in the fall of your senior year in high school. This is the
ideal time to get information prior to arranging for your audition.
Speaking of auditions, we recommend that you choose the
earliest audition date possible. (http://www.music.unt.edu/admissions/ugtools.shtml)
. When you visit, inquire about any performances
scheduled for the day which you might want to attend. (http://www.music.unt.edu/events/index.shtml)
There are three full-time academic advisors in our office. We
each hold multiple degrees in Music from different universities
and in different areas within Music. This means that our perspective
as advisors in Music is quite broad and is based on a great deal
of exposure to the programs and practices of music schools across
the US .
When you visit our office, you may speak with any of the advisors.
We are all knowledgeable about the degrees offered in the COM
and University requirements and resources. The Advising Office
is located on the second (main) floor of the Music Building ,
Room 260. You may contact us directly using the following:
Judy Fisher: 940-565-3734 (fisher@music.unt.edu)
Specific focus: Jazz Studies and Music Education
Carol Pollard: 940-565-3781 (cpollard@music.unt.edu)
Specific focus: Performance, Composition, Music Theory, Music
History and Literature
Becky King: 940-369-7545 (bking@music.unt.edu)
Specific focus: International Students, all degree areas, Audits
Remember, music students must also apply to UNT, independently
of your COM audition application. Once you've auditioned, you
will be notified by the COM of your audition results. Once you
apply to and are accepted by the University, you will receive
mailed information about UNT Orientation
Advising and Registration. We recommend that
you attend the earliest available orientation session. These orientations
fill up quickly, so we urge you to send in your UNT application
as soon as possible. During Orientation, new Music majors meet
with the advisors individually and a specific course plan for
registration is worked out at that time.
It's been a pleasure to 'talk' with you here. Please contact
us with your questions. We always enjoy visiting with prospective
students and their families! Come to see us soon!
Sincerely,
The COM Advising Office
The University of North Texas and the College of Music welcome transfer students to our undergraduate program. Here are a few important facts for those planning to transfer.
• All students, including those transferring form other schools,
must be accepted by audition on their principle instrument into the College
of Music . Admission to the University of North Texas does not guarantee
admission to the College of Music. Auditions are held early in the spring
semester for the following school year admittance (for example: for admission
for Fall 2006, Spring 2007, or Summer 2007, you must audition either
January 28, February 11, or March 4, 2006 or send a taped audition
(allowed only for certain instruments) by April 1, 2006).
No applications will be considered after April 1 2006 for the school
year 2006-2007. For admission information visit www.music.unt.edu/admissions.
Because of the large number of students that audition
for the College of Music each year we do have to deny admittance
to some students. We strongly recommend auditioning before making
plans for moving to Denton or registering for classes.
UNT accepts transfer hours from most accredited
colleges and universities. A case-by-case evaluation of transfer
credits will be made after enrollment to determine exactly how
transfer courses may apply to meeting UNT degree requirements.
Check the UNT transfer guide web site at http://essc.unt.edu/registrar/articulation/index.html
to see general information about the transfer of courses
to the UNT core.
UNT Admissions will send you a summary of the credits you have
transferred to UNT including the number of credit hours accepted,
number of credit hours attempted and number of grade points earned
for your courses. You will not receive a summary of how each of
your courses applies toward your degree/major, until you speak
with an advisor at orientation (all new students are required
to attend orientation and can not register without attending).
Courses taken at a two year (or junior) college
cannot be considered equivalent to UNT upper level (3000 and 4000)
courses.
Private lessons in transfer are considered equivalent
to MUAS (secondary lessons) at UNT. The private lesson faculty
may determine to accept private lessons at the MUAC or MUAM level,
but this is done on a case-by-case situation only, based on the
student's ability level.
Lower level Music Theory and Aural Skills classes
transfer automatically as the same courses here at UNT. Students,
however, should be prepared for the next level course when they
arrive at UNT.
Class piano placement is determined by testing
at orientation. For more information regarding the secondary piano
proficiency required for all music majors see "Piano Proficiency"
at www.music.unt.edu/piano
Up to 4 hours of large ensemble (MULB) credit
may be applied in transfer toward a BM degree at UNT. However,
all music majors are required to be in a music laboratory (MULB)
each semester they are at UNT, even if the minimum number of lab
hours has already been met.
It is strongly recommended that students
audition and begin taking courses at UNT as soon as possible in
their college career because of the extensive lesson requirements
for completing the music degree. Delaying your admittance as a
music major may significantly delay your graduation year.
