Orientation
Once you have been accepted to the University of North Texas and
auditioned for the College of Music you will be mailed information
about transfer orientation or freshman orientation.
Freshman orientation is a 3 day, 2 night program required of all
incoming students. We encourage music majors to register and attend
the first orientation session that fits into your schedule as classes
fill quickly and the students at the earlier orientations will have
more classes and sections to choose from in planning their schedule.
There is also a Parent Orientation offered during Freshman Orientations.
Parents attend a similar, but different, schedule than their students
and will meet with the Academic Deans, Academic Advisors, University
Administrators, and many other University departments. This is a
great time to ask questions and learn all about UNT and what your
student will be experiencing over the next few years.
If you are a transfer student you will attend a one day orientation
session (no parent orientation offered) which will include placement
testing, meeting with an advisor, planning and registration for
the upcoming semester. Again we recommend attending the first orientation
you are eligible to attend.
At freshman orientation you will take a music theory test to determine
the best music theory course to take that first semester. Please
review the music theory information below to help you prepare for
this test.
If you are a transfer student and you have taken a college class
in music theory before attending UNT you will meet with an academic
advisor during your orientation time to go over your transcript
and decide on your theory placement. If you have not previously
had a college music theory course you will take the placement test
described on the review sheet below.
(insert theory review sheet here)
Depending on your theory placement (freshman and transfer students)
you may also be taking a piano placement test that same day. This
test involves scales, sight reading, figured bass etc. It grows
progressively harder to determine the best piano class for you to
take that first semester. If you have no previous piano experience
you may sign up for MUAG 1011 (Piano Class I) without testing. The
test is mainly for students attempting to pass into a higher level
piano class for that semester.
Also at orientation you will meet with an Academic Advisor and
plan your schedule for the first semester. The advisor may be a
faculty member in your major area or an Academic Advisor from the
College of Music. You will meet with this person after taking your
placement tests and together you will decide the classes to take
that semester. Before you leave orientation you will register your
planned courses for the upcoming semester.
When you are at orientation you will also receive information about
performance group auditions. These auditions are held the week before
classes start in the fall semester so you should plan on arriving
at UNT about a week before classes start so you can audition for
the various performing groups. The dormitories open on Sunday, a
week and a day before classes start. If you plan on performing with
marching band you will move into the dorm on Saturday (one day early)
and begin rehearsing on that Sunday. Please make your travel plans
so you can be here for all of the events that week.
